The Leavenworth Reindeer Farm is one of the gems of our little Bavarian neck of the woods. This is a truly unique experience you can enjoy during your visit year-round. If you have ever dreamed of getting up-close-and-personal with the beautiful creatures that are best known for pulling Santa’s sleigh, look no further!
The Leavenworth Reindeer Farm is not just unique in our town, but is truly unique as far as this type of experience goes. This farm is certified by the USDA and is a member of ROBA (the Reindeer Owners & Breeders Association of America). It is also the only place in the contiguous 48 States where you can feed, pet, and pose with the reindeer. It is an experience for the books…and the photo albums!
This family-run farm joined the Leavenworth landscape a few years back and has been such a welcomed addition. Their tours are top-notch and are typically led by owner Hans Christian Andersen…yes, seriously! That's how you *know* they must be qualified to own a reindeer farm! You will be greeted by smiling faces and offered seasonal refreshments when you arrive. Then you gather ‘round with your fellow reindeer enthusiasts and learn all sorts of cool facts and surprising info. (Some of the answers to Hans’ questions, in no particular order as to avoid spoilers: domesticated, hollow, flotation, clicking, cold legs, and FAST. Yup, we’ve been on the tour a few times). You will also get the opportunity to hold and examine some reindeer antlers and learn more about the process of how they grow and shed them each year.
Once you have been caught up to speed about all things reindeer, it’s time to meet the furry friends! In the summertime, you get to feed them fresh willow branches, and in the winter there is pellet food that you can feed them right from your hand! Once you’ve had a chance to feed some of the herd and hang out in their pen for a bit, you can line up for a photo with whichever reindeer is currently boasting the nicest coat or antlers (and feels like cooperating). The farm is also home to gorgeous draft horses, chickens, pigs, bunnies, and a turkey. There are even little play areas and a beautiful barn where you can take pictures in Santa’s sleigh, a refurbished tractor, or the horse carriage. The photo ops here are endless!
In the winter, Santa himself makes an appearance at the farm during every tour in November and December! If you're wondering, yes, it is still worth it in the summertime! Their coats look a little funny as they are transitioning their fur, but the velvet antlers are a sight to see and there are pregnant reindeer mamas and new babies roaming around!
It is such a unique, beautiful, and fun experience, and is definitely something that makes you say, “that was SO Leavenworth!” We are so grateful to have the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm right down the road from us. You'll have to make sure you visit the next time you stay with us at Run of the River!
If you decide to make a visit, be sure to follow the rules and guidelines set by the farm. The most important of these is to make sure you do not wear clothing or shoes that have been around sheep or goats, as they carry a spore that is deadly for reindeer. We want to make sure everyone does their part to keep these beautiful creatures safe and healthy! Their website is full of other tips to know before you go, but this tour is definitely one with an emphasis on fun! Visits during peak season are $15/person and $12/person during the off-season. In the winter, it is definitely wise to book your tour in advance.
Have tons of fun and take lots of pictures…everyone will be asking where you went!!
