Adventurous Summer Activities in Leavenworth, WA!

June 10, 2019

Leavenworth may be known for its magical Christmas season, but summertime in the Icicle Valley is truly a sight to behold! Adventure awaits on trails, rivers, and mountains. Whether you are looking to try something new, or just try a favorite activity in a new locale, there is something for you to explore! Below we outline some of our favorite summer adventures in the Icicle Valley. Enjoy a luxurious and relaxing stay at Run of the River and allow us to help you book your next excursion!

Horseback Riding

Our favorite horseback riding in the Icicle Valley is with Wild at Heart Horse Rides. Owned and operated by Erin Boyes, you can truly experience the natural beauty of both the landscapes and the horses when you visit. Erin’s passion for this lifestyle is evident – her horses are treated like family, and you are welcomed into that family when you ride with them. Wild at Heart does not ride with bits and the horses are “barefoot” (without horseshoes).

Our staff has enjoyed a few rides with Erin and each one was a stunning experience. Wild at Heart is nestled in the town of Plain, about 25 minutes from Run of the River. The valley views and mountain peaks are absolutely breathtaking, as well as the streams, wildflowers, and critters that you’ll see along the way. Erin does a fantastic job educating riders ahead of time and tried to gauge what we were comfortable with before we arrived. I had the honor of riding Thor (an 18.5 hand horse…yes, he’s HUGE and the biggest sweetie!).

Rides range incrementally from 1.5 hours to 4 hours, the longest of which includes a lunch. Wild at Heart can also accommodate private rides and even special occasion rides if you are looking for a chance to propose or celebrate a birthday! We highly recommend these tours, whether you are a lifelong horse lover or a horse riding novice. This is a beautiful way to spend an afternoon of your vacation!

Rafting

Check out our friends at Blue Sky Outfitters if you are looking for a rafting adventure! They offer full-day and half-day tours that allow you to fully explore the rapids in the Icicle Valley. Your guides will brief you on all of the safety protocols and will get you out on the river enjoying the white water!

The full-day tour includes a delicious steak dinner (you can also add this for a fee to your half-day rafting tour). You will have a blast, get your adrenaline pumping, enjoy a bit of a workout, and have one-of-a-kind views from the Wenatchee River. Do something you can tell your friends and family about when you get home!

Tubing

Are you looking for something a bit more relaxing than rafting? Tubing is the perfect opportunity to keep cool in the summertime and enjoy a different perspective on the area. Osprey Rafting Co. offers awesome rafting trips, but they also feature at-your-own-pace tubing floats and paddle board rentals.

These trips offer the opportunity to enjoy little beaches along the Wenatchee River and feature views of Mt. Cashmere, the Peshastin Pinnacles, fruit orchards, and plenty of osprey and eagle nests lining the river. Treat yourself to a relaxing and adventurous daytime activity (your float will last between 45 minutes and 2 hours, depending on your pace and stops). Osprey also offers rafting trips, kayak rentals, and other water fun!

Ziplining

If you are looking to feed your adventurous spirit, ziplining is the way to go!! Washington is known for its stunning views, and this is one of the most unique ways to experience them. Head over to Leavenworth Ziplines at Mountain Springs Lodge in Plain where they have two tours available: one featuring five zip lines and the other featuring nine lines.

You will be fully briefed and outfitted with safety gear, then will head out with an amazing guide. We have been on these tours multiple times and have had nothing short of a blast each time. You will soar 20 stories above Beaver Creek Valley and will ride lines up to a quarter-mile long! If you have a fear of heights, this might not be the activity for you. If you are simply a little unsure, your guides will be wonderful at encouraging you and are very well-trained to make sure you have a good and safe time.

Leavenworth Ziplines makes the experience FUN, featuring interesting facts, silly side games,  funny assigned names, and chances to do funky and awesome things on ziplines (of course, please wait until your guide explains and demonstrates!).
